The Importance Of Meta Tags

Meta Tags. They freak me out! Not because I hate them or because they take 5 minutes extra to put into a page, but the fact the so few people use them to their advantage.

The basis of search engine optimization when the internet was first formed were meta tags! Title, Description, Keywords... Is it that difficult, no! Then why is it, that so few people actually use them the way they're meant to be used.

Firstly, it looks so professional when you have separate Titles for every page. It's the first thing people see when they find your site in a search engine. Secondly, descriptions. It's that little section underneath the Title tag of your page when your page if found on a search engine.

Now a good title tag and description tag on your page means a well presented page which in turn means it's easier for Google to read, and understand and therefore index. So enough ranting and raving.

Every unique page on your site (that has unique content and is indexed by Google) MUST MUST MUST have a unique, TITLE TAG, DESCRIPTION and KEYWORD TAG. There is however a slight trick to using these meta tags to your advantage:

  • Choose your keywords from your content on your page. Not more than 3 keywords.
  • Those 3 keywords must be in your page title
  • Those 3 keywords must be in your description
  • Those 3 keywords must be in your keywords tag

If you stick to that formula, you'll be guaranteed results in MSN within weeks. Google loves this too as it makes for easier crawling and identification of what contents on the page.

Here's what your META TAGS should look like:
<title>META TAGS </title>
<meta name="description" content="Meta Tag relevance pertaining to SEO and search placement involves tags such as titles, descriptions and keywords." />
<meta name="keywords" content="Meta Tag Relevance, Title Tags, Description Tag, Keywords " />
