Using Blogs to Promote Websites
The first site I ever started as an SEO was a BLOG. In fact it still is my little baby ( S.A. Property Blog ). The reason I started a blog and not a website was because I had no clue about web design. In fact coming from an IT Networking background, web design was far far down on the bottom of my list of things to learn, along with becomming a coder/developer. The funny thing though was that I enjoyed writing articles. The fact that the articles were all property related and I really was not a "property guru" meant nothing. I enjoyed blogging.
I started writing 3 or 4 articles a week, researching, learning and soon had a couple of subscribers to my BLOG. Within 3 months of starting the BLOG, I had a good couple of 100 visitors to my BLOG and a PR of 3. Now I knew nothing about PR and SEO but I knew that I'd hit onto something. In getting a captured BLOG audience I had a captive market to target.
I started a home loans site which I purely promoted via my BLOG. The most amazing thing, within 2 weeks I had all my home loan site pages indexed. Within 4 weeks I had a PR of 3 and within 2 months I driving double the traffic to my home loans site than what my BLOG was generating. This lead me to believe something:
POPULAR BLOG = POPULAR SITE
It's something I stick to and it's something I use very often as a strategy, especially in competative markets. WHY, you may ask. Well it's simple.
1. Most BLOGS are really pointless and don't focus enough on their specific nieche markets. ie. they're too diluted.
2. Most BLOGGERS no nothing about SEO.
3. If you really have a passion for your business, there's nothing more exciting than being able to voice and share your experience with the world.
4. It's the easiest way to keep new content ticking on your site.
Alot of people believe that your BLOG should exist on it's own domain. I believeit doesn't matter. Alot of people believe that Wordpress is more SEO firendly, MAYBE (the plug-ins are great), personally, show me a wordpress BLOG that ranks higher than my BLOGSPOT blog and I'll change my mind.
